Permanent Registrations are actually NOT a myth! They do exist in the State of Montana! These tags are absolutely permanent and do not require to be renewed each year. Here is a detailed explanation of what vehicles this applies to:
Passenger Vehicles & Trucks
• Light vehicles 11 years old or older (cars, pickups, SUVs)
→ Eligible for permanent registration (one-time fee, no renewals).
• Newer vehicles (<11 years old)
→ Must be renewed annually or biennially until they reach 11 years old.
⸻
Motorcycles & Quadricycles (SxS/ATVs if registered as quadricycles)
• All motorcycles and quadricycles
→ Eligible for permanent registration regardless of age.
You pay once, and no renewals are required.
⸻
Boats (Vessels)
• All watercraft in Montana
→ Permanent registration (flat fee, one-time).
No yearly renewal is required, though you still must display decals.
⸻
Snowmobiles
• All snowmobiles
→ Permanent registration (flat fee, one-time).
No annual renewal.
⸻
Jet Skis / Personal Watercraft
• Treated the same as boats under Montana law.
→ Permanent registration (flat fee, one-time).
⸻
Aircraft
• Aircraft (planes, helicopters, jets) are not registered through the DMV/MVD.
They are regulated separately under Montana Aeronautics Division and federal FAA registration.
