How to Insure Your LLC’s Vehicles

To insure a vehicle registered under a Montana LLC while living in another state, you need to separate ownership from usage — and disclose that properly to the insurance company. Here’s how to do it legally and correctly:

✅ 1. Use the Montana LLC as the Titled Owner

    •    The Montana LLC should be the legal owner of the vehicle.

    •    The title and registration should be issued in the LLC’s name with a Montana address.

    •    You (the individual) can be listed as a member or manager of the LLC, but not the owner of the vehicle.

✅ 2. Insure the Vehicle Where It’s Primarily Garaged

Insurance companies care more about where the car is primarily kept and driven than where it’s registered.

    •    On the insurance application:

    •    List the Montana LLC as the named insured.

    •    List your home address (in your state) as the garaging location.

    •    Disclose that the vehicle is registered to an LLC in Montana.

    •    Many insurers will ask, “Is this vehicle used for business?” You can answer no, unless it actually is.

💡 Tip: Some insurers (like Progressive, Safeco, and specialty carriers) are used to insuring Montana LLC vehicles — especially for high-end or collector cars, RVs, and exotics.

✅ 3. Choose an Insurance Company That Allows LLC Ownership

Some carriers won’t write personal policies for LLC-owned vehicles unless it’s a business policy. You have three options:

    •    Personal policy: If allowed, write the policy with the Montana LLC as the owner and you as the insured driver.

    •    Commercial auto policy: Not required unless you are required for fleets, business-use vehicles, or exotics — but may cost more.

    •    Specialty insurers: Like Hagerty (for collector cars), National General, or Grundy — especially good for Montana LLC setups.

✅ 4. Keep Supporting Documents Handy

    •    Articles of Organization for the Montana LLC.

    •    Operating Agreement (listing you as manager/member).

    •    Montana title and registration.

    •    Insurance ID card and proof of garaging address.

This way, you’re prepared if asked by:

    •    Law enforcement,

    •    Insurance adjusters,

    •    DMV or tax officials in your home state.

⚠️ What NOT to Do

    •    Don’t lie about where the car is located — that’s insurance fraud.

    •    Don’t insure it as a Montana resident if you aren’t — it could result in denied claims.

    •    Don’t list yourself as the owner on the policy if the LLC owns the vehicle.
